Bridal Banter: Bridal Makeup Kit Essentials-Part Three (Lip Makeup)

Hola ladies! After bridal makeup kit essentials Part One and Part Two which covered base makeup and eye makeup, we are back with the final version- Lip Makeup. We all know how important it is to make those lips defined and beautiful on our special day, don’t we? After all, the lip makeup can actually make or mar the lovely “Bridal smile” ;) So how to pucker up for those lovely looking lips? Read on to check what we shortlisted for you!

1.    Lip Balms: For me, the most important thing a bride should do prior to application of any lipstick is apply a GOOD lip balm to moisturize the lips. Dry flaky and cracked lips can be hugely unsightly and even your hi-end lipstick worth thousands will look like cheap footpath stuff on under-nourished lips. After trying ample number of lip-balms, the one we have shortlisted is Maybelline Baby Lips range. They have non-tinted as well as tinted balms which are amply moisturizing and have good staying power too. Priced at under Rs.200, these can be your best bet!
Elegant Eves Suggests: Even if you opt for high-end lip balms for day uses, please don’t forget to lightly exfoliate your lips and apply a thick layer of Boroline before retiring to bed at night. Boroline is a time tested cream which ensures you wake up to nourished skin (lips) the next day.

2.   Lip Liner: Yes, we have “graduated” and come way ahead of those times when lip liners had to “show” beyond the lipstick :P Super light lipstick and super dark lip liners- The thought still gives me jitters! Now it’s all about creating a defined look for your lips and giving the lipstick a perfect base (Yes, lip liners should be used to fill up the lips too before applying the lipstick). Having said that, you should always go for liners which do not tug or pull at your lips and are extremely drying. What we found to be BEST lipliners under Rs.400 are the Lakme 9 to 5 lipliners. They are smooth, buttery, extremely pigmented and last till you remove them! As a bride, you should get yourself three basic lip liner shades: A true red, a pink or fuchsia and a N*de or beige-pink shade. The N*de or Beige pink shade when used all over the lips can even work as a base for creating various shades of lipsticks. For instance, a dark maroon lipstick over a layer of nude lip liner base, would give you a rosy dark pink shade :D The ones I had included in my kitty were shades Red Alert and Beige Pink from Lakme 9 to 5 range (Read review here). I also bought a pink one from Coloressence lip liner range. Though this one isn’t as pigmented as the Lakme ones, it gives quite a smooth application.
Elegant Eves Suggests: Don’t skip the lips liner on the wedding and reception nights. A well-defined lip makes a lot of difference in photos. Make sure the shade of lip-liner is an exact match with your lipstick.

3.   Lipstick: Our personal choice is a semi matte finish lipstick for your important day. Semi-matte lipstick will ensure your lips look nourished and not too flashy (as in creamy or glossy lipsticks) in photographs. Also, creamy and glossy lipsticks tend to fade away sooner. Our picks for a bride are a true red, an MLBB (my lips but better shade), a dusty pink and hot fuchsia. The brands which have these in the best possible quality are MAC (Ruby Woo for red), Colorbar (Bare for MLBB) and Faces Canada (Read My Lips for hot fuchsia) and L’oreal Paris (Pure Amaranthe for Hot fuchsia, Pure Rouge for Red etc). Also, Lakme 9 to 5 range’s Red Coat is a total dupe of the cult MAC Ruby Woo J Check out the MEGA detailed comparison here J. Lakme Absolute Matte also has good semi matte lipsticks. Check out one such red here. I had worn Ruby Woo on my wedding (HERE) and L’oreal Pure Amaranthe on my reception (HERE).
Elegant Eves Suggests: If you don’t want to splurge too much on lipstick, check out the comparison post between Lakme and MAC. Colorbar also has some fabulous semi-matte lipsticks in their ranges. We personally would not suggest liquid matte lipsticks, because although they are insanely pigmented, they are mostly very dry and might end up making your lips cracked and cakey in photos. Keep them for your smaller functions.

4.   Lip gloss: Lip glosses come in handy for those quick looks in smaller functions. You may even dab a bit of lip gloss just at the centre of your lips after applying lipstick for that illusion of fuller lips. Our Favourite picks are Rimmel London Vinyl Lip gloss in Snog (For that universally flattering dusty pink shade). L’oreal and Maybelline also make pretty pigmented glosses which can be saviour for your day functions (read review here). For budget Brides, one dusty pink and one coral shade should suffice. I made the mistake of buying a red gloss once, it’s lying idle in my vanity till now: Glossy red lips are nothing short of disaster! (Read review of MAC Russian Red lip gloss)
