Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Palette Vol.1- Review and Swatches
Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Palette Vol.1 |
If you follow me
on Instagram (@eleganteves), you
must have noticed me posting pictures of this lip palette as a recent buy. I
have been using this palette ever since, and today here is a totally honest
review of this apparent “must-buy” which the beauty world is swearing by. If
the word “lip palette” brings back memories of gooey-non-pigmented-glossy lip
shades squashed in a palette, you might want to check this review out J

Vol.1
Price: $48 USD (Available in India via Instagram sellers who charge
Rs.4800 for the palette. I bought it during half-price sale, and could bag this

Packaging:
A very sturdy black plastic magnetic-lock palette with a clear lid housed
inside a matte black carton box. It includes a double-ended brush which has a
spatula on one side and flat tapered lip brush on the other. There is also a
metal mixing plate for mixing up the various shades in the palette to make your
customized shade. It is a very handy palette for makeup-artists as well.

Now, I shall be discussing in details how I feel
about this palette, is it really a “must-have” and what you should keep in mind
while placing that order.
1. Price point:
I do not think spending Rs.4800 is justified for any makeup palette (My
personal opinion)- especially when a huge array of affordable products are
already present which are at par in quality. I got this only because of the
half-price sale. Rate: 2.8/5
2. Shades:
With thirteen varying shades in every possible colour family and five primary
colours to adjust, brighten, darken any customized shade, this palette is a
SURE winner. It is literally like owning every lipstick shade imaginable. For
non-hoarders like me, I love such multi-tasking products which lets me avoid
unnecessary piling up of extra makeup (Lipsticks in this case). From neutrals,
to nudes, to brights, to dark vampy shades, I have successfully mixed up new lip
colours with these 18 shades. Also, there are no such options in any brand in
drugstore as of now. Rate: 5/5
3. Brush:
This is hands-down one of the best lip brushes I have used so far. Even on my
super-thin lips which further thins down at the corners, this flat and dense
brush creates perfect lines and fills the lips properly. I do not need to use a
lip liner to create the perfect lip-contour with this brush. Rate: 5/5
4. Pigmentation:
Unlike whatever lip palettes we have used this far, which were mostly sticky
lip glosses pressed into a tray, the shades in this palette are rich mattes.
However, unlike what every other review that I had read has claimed, they are
not “insanely pigmented”. The pigmentation is no doubt very good, but on the
lips it is nowhere close to a “burst of color” which products like Colopop
ultra mattes/satins or Sugar liquid lipsticks give. You would need to layer up
twice-thrice to get the exact shade of the palette. Of course the same shades
would look like an ‘insanely pigmented’ product on a Caucasoid skin tone because
their lips are already very pale. But on Indian lips, which are mostly
pigmented, you would need to layer up. Rate: 3/5
5. Texture:
Coming to texture, these are ‘comfortable matte’- are very lightweight and thus
the layering up does not seem to be a problem. The final effect too is a very
natural looking finish- unlike the ‘on-your-face’ bright texture that most
liquid lipsticks give. On the positive side, you will not feel your lips
weighed down by the product. On the negative side, if you want your bold lips
to be the centre of attention of your entire look, this texture might let you
down. I fail to understand why none of the reviews which I have read mentioned this crucial
point. This texture is unlike any cream or matte lipstick I have used so far.
One way to cope with this issue is to use a same shade lip liner to fill your
entire lips before piling on these shades. However, it would take much luck to
find exact matches in lipliners! Thus even though there is a stunning red in
this palette, for my special evenings, I would still prefer topping it with
some Ruby Woo (MAC Ruby Woo). Rate: 3.5/5
6. Staying Power:
Again a disappointment because this stays on intact for 3-4 hours without any
meals. After normal meals, there is an even fading. But if your meal is
exceptionally oily and lip-smacking, then be ready to get disappointed. For a
$48 palette, I see no excuse for an average staying power. Rate: 2.8
7. Feel on lips: A good amount
of exfoliating and moisturising is required before using these shades, because
I found them to be slightly drying on lips. However, this might also be because
of the changing weather these days. Rate:3.5/5
When should you buy ABH Lip palette?
1. Only
during sales when it is retailed in half price.
2. If
you do not like hoarding too many lipsticks but still want to try different
shades.
3. If
you like matte lip colours but hate the ‘poster colour’ like heavy feel that
most matte lipsticks give.
4. If
you are a makeup artist.
5. If
you want a ‘matching lipstick’ for all dresses you own :P
6. If
you have a fairly good idea of painting (Required for mixing new shades with
the available shades)
When should you stay away from ABH Lip
palette?
1. When
the palette is retailing at original price of $48, which means Instagram
sellers would sell at Rs.4800. It is NOT worth that much.
2. If
you have a habit of buying most of the recent launches and already own multiple
lipsticks, there is a chance that you already have the shade that you want to
mix up with this palette.
3. If
you had no clue which colours are to be mixed to get a particular shade in drawing
class :P Because, let’s get real: No one will have the time to go through the
shade-mixing chart on ABH website every time you get ready. Also, this is an extremely
expensive palette for ‘failed experiments’.
4. If
you like your lip shades to be bold with one stroke and attention grabbing.
I believe, that sums up the palette! Inspite of all
these pros and cons, I still like this palette because of the pros mentioned
above. Black Friday sale is coming up, so final decision is yours to make J
Below are two looks I created with this palette. I have also included the

One of the best reviews of this lip palette.. Loved the details.. And I did mention the cons to you ;)
ReplyDelete:P I meant about the official blog post reviews that I had read :P
DeleteAfter seeing your swatches, I was checking to buy but after the review think I should stay away... Even I believe that, there is no need to spend such huge amount in makeup (there is an exception In case of makeup artists). Thanks for the detailed review..
ReplyDeleteThank you dear. I felt an honest review was much needed. Many a times we end up buying high-end stuff and then even if they turn out average, we justify our buy mindlessly :) That is so wrong
DeleteI am feeling so jealous of you right now. this is such a gorgeous palette and you got it such an amazing price tag!
