Hey beauties, if you have been following me on Facebook, you
might have seen me doing a smokey eyes with nude lips look on Sunday. Well,
that look was created with MAC Kinda
Sexy lipstick but there was a major glitch in the tale. Although the
picture looked quite alright, but that actually involved a lot of work: You
will have to read this review to know why this cult favourite nude lipstick by
MAC gave me a tough time :P

Shade:
Although MAC
describes Kinda Sexy as a “neutral pinky rose”, I found the same to be more of
more peachy beige with warm undertones and a satin matte finish. Here is also a comparison swatch with two other MAC cult lipsticks. MAC Twig is more pink and MAC Mocha is more brownish peach.

Texture: MAC
Kinda Sexy is from the Matte range of MAC lipstick line, the other ranges being
Amplified, Creamsheen, Lustre, Satin and Retro matte. Matte lipsticks are known
to have full blown pigmentation and they apply with better ease than Retro
Matte ones which are almost as dry as crayons (READ MAC Ruby Woo). True to the
range name, Kinda Sexy applies with ease and gives complete opaque colour pay-off in single swipe
itself. It will literally “hide” your natural lip color! But suffice
it to say, matte lipsticks do require a soft and moisturized lip beneath, so
you need to stay away from them if your lips are dry and flaky (till you do
something about it!)

Difference
Between Nude and MLBB lip colors: There is a difference between
Nude lipsticks and MLBB lipsticks (My Lips But Better). When makeup laymen use
the term “natural” looking lipstick, they mean MLBB lip colours: colours which
are slightly darker than your natural lip shade and make you lips look prettier
without much added colour on the lips. Many of us confuse Nude
lipsticks with MLBB and end up creating...ahem....disasters. Nude lipsticks on the other
hand also comes in a variety of shades like MLBB and each complexion might have
a nude colour specifically meant for them, but what nude lipsticks do is take
out whatever colour is there on your natural lips and sort of create a “blank
canvas”. While MLBB will give you an easy going look, Nude lipsticks when
paired with intense eye makeup will give you a more sophisticated and “polished”
look. But the catch is nude lipsticks require as much work as a red
lipstick does: they are not “swipe and go” lipsticks. What happens when you don’t
give a nude lipstick that much “respect” and just apply it directly to your
lips? Read my experience then!

My take: I bought
Kinda Sexy after reading review all over the net that this is supposedly one of
the “best nude lipstick” available. My lipstick stash contains mainly reds, fuchsias and MLBBs and not
a single Nude. That was enough reason for me to join the bandwagon. Sadly, the
MAC store didn’t have a tester for this one and I couldn’t test the shade on me
before paying that huge amount :-/ (Don’t EVER do this!) As soon as I reached
home, I swiped it on my lips (Second mistake) and I almost screamed out! It
looked as if I smeared papaya milk shake all over my lips L I am NC37-40 in MAC studiofix and C3 in MAC Face
and Body foundation. In “normal” language, I am medium-fair with strong yellow
tones and still this didn’t suit me :-o It washed my complexion out completely.
Just have a look how it looks when just swiped across the lips :-/

I was extremely disappointed but then this Sunday I tried a
full face makeup with Kinda Sexy. I prepped my skin with MAC Face and Body Foundation in C3, concealed and corrected with LA Pro Girl concealers, powdered with Lotus Ecostay compact powder and
added some blush and highlighter.
For eyes, I did a full smokey eyes with my Technic palette and Sleek Au Naturel palette (Tutorial will be up soon) and then
went ahead to “tackle” the lips. On my pre-moisturized lips, I lined and filled
with a nude lip liner from Lakme (Beige Pink from 9 to 5 range), then I again lined and lightly filled my lips with
a matte brown lip liner from Mayeblline (recent buy and LOVE it!) ever so
slightly since I wanted my lips to just get that “pout” definition and not
become chocolate coloured! After that I used my lip brush to gently mix both
liners together making sure the pout line remains without looking too harsh
(remember the 90’s??ughhh). After ALL these steps, I applied a layer of MAC Kinda
Sexy, blended well with the brush and very lightly blotted off the extra (While
blotting a matte lipstick never apply too much pressure, you will end up
accentuating lines otherwise) And THIS is how I looked after that. I was SUPER
DUPER happy that I could achieve the much raved “Nude lips and classic smokey
eyes look” and that my lipstick wasn’t a bad investment after all! :D

By now, all of you must have understood, nude lipsticks, MAC
Kinda Sexy or not, are not for non-fussy people. You can do justice to a nude
lip colour ONLY if you are a makeup enthusiast. If you are not, MLBB shades are
your best friends :D

Also, I would advise people with complexions deeper than MAC
NC 42 to stay away from this colour because there are other nudes better suited
for your gorgeous complexion. MAC Kinda
Sexy lipstick is strictly for fair, fair-medium and medium skin tones. Darker
skinned beauties can rock it only if they are professionally trained in makeup
or have a VERY good and experienced hand at it.

I guess I blabbered a bit too much but this was needed to
clear your confusion regarding Kinda Sexy (Internet is full of people promoting
the shade as a universally flattering shade, which it is certainly not!)
Rating: 4/5
Elegant Eves tip: MAC Kinda Sexy can
also be used to create a VARIETY of different lip colors when used on top of
your favourite dark lipsticks :D See
this pastel pink I got after I topped it over L’oreal’s Lincoln Rose :D
